Eric Fanning Confirmed as Secretary of the Army
Eric Fanning, Zeta '90
Eric Fanning, Zeta '90 (Dartmouth), was sworn in as the Secretary of the Army on May 18. He has filled that role in an acting capacity since November, 2015 while awaiting Senate confirmation. Eric served in numerous positions prior to this including Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff of the Department of Defense.

Fanning becomes the first openly gay leader of any U.S. military service, his appointment coming five years after the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," which had prohibited gay and lesbian service members from being open about their sexuality.

Another Indy 500 Pole for Sam Schmidt
James Hinchcliffe (L) and Sam Schmidt after winning the Indy 500 pole.

Sam Schmidt, Lambda Sigma '86 (Pepperdine) was the founding president of the local fraternity which became Psi U's Lambda Sigma chapter in 1999. He is also an owner of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Not only did Sam's driver, James Hinchcliffe, take the pole for this year's Indy 500 in dramatic fashion, his three drivers qualifed in the top ten. That's the same number as Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing. Sam's team also won the 500 pole in 2011.

Arguably winning the pole was not the best part of Sam's day. A January 2000 crash at Walt Disney World Speedway in Florida left Schmidt paralyzed from the neck down. Prior to the start of qualifying on Sunday, Sam drove a 2016 Corvette, modified into a semi-autonomous motorcar developed by Arrow Electronics, at speeds reaching 152 mph. He turned his head to steer.

After his accident Sam founded Cure Paralysis Now whose mission is to cure paralysis. This year the Lambda Sigma raised $12,165 for Sam's foundation.

Purdue, Clemson and Michigan

Purdue University

Clemson University

University of Michigan
Psi Upsilon's newest colony is at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. When chartered it will become Psi U's 50th chapter.

The interest group approached Psi Upsilon and several other fraternities near the end of the spring semester. After some discussion, the group chose Psi Upsilon given our values, intimate size, and the proximity of the International Office to Purdue.

The Tau Epsilon Provisional Chapter (Clemson Unversity) will present a petition to become a full chapter to the Executive Council in June. Pending Executive Council approval, the petition will be sent to the chapters in the fall which will make the final determination.

The Phi Alumni Corporation working with the staff of the International Office, has obtained permission to reestabish the Phi Chapter at the University of Michigan. Recruiting will begin in fall 2016.

If you know of students at Purdue, Clemson, or Michigan who would benefit from membership in Psi Upsilon, contact Tom Fox.
