History and Grandeur at DC Event
William Webster, Gamma '45 with Gary Pan, Eta '86 and Gary's wife, Wendy.

Psi Upsilon brothers spanning seven decades from 13 chapters gathered on March 10, 2016 in Washington DC. They learned about the origins of The Society of the Cincinnati and marvelled at the grandeur of Anderson House.

Established in 1783, The Society of the Cincinnati is the oldest private patriotic organization in the United States. The founders of the Society assigned their descendants the task of preserving the memory of the patriotic sacrifices that made American liberty a reality.

Completed in the spring of 1905, Anderson House was the winter residence of Larz Anderson, an American diplomat, and his wife, Isabel, an author and benefactress. For more than thirty years, the couple enjoyed their Washington home as a showcase for their art collection and a backdrop for high society galas.

Mark Smucker, Phi Beta '92
The J. M. Smucker Company named Mark Smucker, Phi Beta '92 (College of William & Mary), to replace his uncle, Richard K. Smucker, as chief executive. The transition is part of a plan that the more-than-century-old food products company says will help long-term growth.

Mark Smucker, currently president of the consumer and natural foods unit, will become chief effective May 1. He is Richard Smucker's nephew and Timothy P. Smucker's son. Richard Smucker, who has been chief since 2011, will succeed Timothy P. Smucker as executive chairman. The company said the announcement ''underscores the tradition of management continuity that has shaped Smucker into the company it is today.''

Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes: A Day's Work for Dan Zarrilli
Dan Zarrilli, Eta '92
New York City's Office of Recovery and Resiliency (ORR) is headed by Dan Zarrilli, Eta '97 (Lehigh).

It's Dan's job to make sure New York doesn't turn into a sort of nightmarish disaster movie scene, but he prefers not to think of it in worst case scenarios.

Dan told an audience of civil and environmental engineering students during a recent visit to Lehigh: "In the last 15 years, we've had 9/11, a blackout, an Ebola threat, a plane crash in Queens, two tornadoes, two hurricanes, and an earthquake."

Not only does Dan's office tackle the NYC's efforts to withstand and emerge stronger from the effects of climate change, he's also looking at ways to reduce the city's carbon footprint, improve its aging infrastructure, spur new construction efforts, strengthen communities, reduce income inequality, prepare for population growth, and even cut commute times.

Philanthropy & Service
Zeta (Dartmouth)

When the brothers of the Zeta Chapter found out that Anya, a Dartmouth staff member who works at Late Night @ Collis Cafe, was going through a very difficult time, they took steps to help. Anya had recently suffered the loss of one of her sisters in Ukraine following a battle with cancer.

They learned that most of Anya's sister's cancer treatment was paid for completely out of pocket, draining the life savings of Anya and other family members. Given these financial troubles, Anya was left with no means to travel back to her family in Ukraine during her time of grieving.

Through, the chapter launched a campaign to raise money to send Anya back home to Ukraine. Setting a goal of $3,000 for Anya's travel expenses, campaign ultimately raised $4,298.
