The Palmer House Hilton
17 East Monroe Street
Chicago, IL 60603

The Palmer House is one of the most historic hotels in the United States, and an important part of Chicago's history.

The original Palmer Hotel (known as "The Palmer") opened on September 26, 1871, but burned down just 13 days later on October 9, 1871 in the Great Chicago Fire. Potter Palmer immediately set to work rebuilding, and with a $1.7 million signature loan, constructed one of the fanciest hotels worldwide in postfire Chicago and reopened in 1875.This second iteration of the Palmer House became a common destination for famous visitors to Chicago. In 1893, during the World's Fair, Bertha Palmer worked with a pastry chef at the hotel to create a special cake like dessert that could be used in boxed lunches, and what they came up with is the first "brownie". Another famous piece of history occurred in 1895 when a meeting at the hotel of faculty representatives from various Midwestern universities resulted in the founding of the Big Ten Conference.

By the 1920s, the business in downtown Chicago could support a much larger facility, and the Palmer Estate decided to erect a new 25-story hotel. They hired Holabird & Roche to design the building. Between 1923 and 1925, the hotel was rebuilt on the same site. In 1945 Conrad Hilton bought the property, and in 1946 officially formed the Hilton Hotels Corporation. In 2009 the Palmer House underwent a $170 million renovation and expanded to over 1600 hotel rooms - making it the second largest hotel in Chicago.

Psi Upsilon also has a lot of connections to this property. The 48th Psi Upsilon Convention in 1881 was the first in held in Chicago, and on May 19th, the Convention held it's Closing Banquet at the Palmer House. In 1928, the 95th Psi Upsilon Convention returned to the Palmer House for a dinner in the "Red Lacquer Room", which still exists today.
