Zeta Named LA Times CEO

Austin Beutner, Zeta '82 (Dartmouth College), civic leader and former Wall Street investment banker, is the new publisher and chief executive of the Los Angeles Times.

Beutner, 54, who served as first deputy mayor of Los Angeles for more than a year and briefly explored a run for mayor himself, succeeds Eddy W. Hartenstein as Times publisher.

Hartenstein said that he recommended Beutner for the position and that the board of Tribune Publishing Co., The Times' new corporate parent, approved the appointment last week.

"I wanted to find someone who was clearly steeped and invested in the city, and who has the same belief that I do, which is that a democracy doesn't work without a vibrant Fourth Estate," said Hartenstein, who was publisher for six years.

It encourages the world's brightest business minds to compete in teams to solve the planet's biggest challenges with innovative ideas for sustainable start-up enterprises. The 2014 Hult Prize Social Enterprise Challenge seeks to improve chronic disease care in the urban slum. The winners of the challenge can make their ideas reality with the help of $1 million in seed funding.

This year's six finalists include a University of Pennsylvania team consisting of Thoba Grenville-Grey, Tau '14, Josh Tycko, Tau '14, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Tau '14 and two other Penn business students. The team will present their idea, Sweet Bites gum, on September 23, 2014 at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in NYC.

Sweet Bites ran educational programs in schools located in Bangalore India, formed partnerships with local NGOs and sold the gum to local corner stores, overall introducing more than 50,000 kids to Sweet Bites gum.

Henry Poor Fund Challenge Exceeds Goal

Tom Poor, Gamma '63 (Amherst) agreed to match, up to $15,000, contributions made to the Henry Poor Scholarship Fund by June 30, 2104. Forty-five brothers accepted Tom's challenge contributing $15,115.29. With those contributions and Tom's matching gift, the fund now exceeds $150,000.

Henry Poor served as Psi Upsilon Fraternity's executive vice president from 1973-1987 and executive director of The Psi Upsilon Foundation from 1987-1991.  He was chairman of the scholarship committee for many years and honored on the occasion of his 90th birthday to have this fund established in his name.

The Poor scholarship is awarded annually to a brother who demonstrates moral, intellectual and social excellence and financial need.  Since its inception in 2009, seven brothers received a Poor scholarship.

Psi U Receives Generous Bequest
(L) Price Gehrke, Chuck Hall, Nu Alpha '71, Norma Gehrke at the 151st Convention

A. Price Gehrke, Pi-Tau '43, provided generously for Psi Upsilon in his estate plan. Thanks to his foresight and the skill of Bob Kaiser, Zeta '39, two Psi Upsilon chapters and Psi Upsilon Fraternity recently received significant bequests.

Price Gehrke served as a director of The Psi Upsilon Foundation and represented the Tau chapter on the Alumni Advisory Board.  Interested in seeing Psi U continue to grow, Price asked Bob Kaiser to help him establish a charitable remainder unitrust.  Bob was instrumental in designing the US Tax Code to allow for charitable planned gifts and worked in Dartmouth's development office.

Price's estate plan provided income for his wife, Norma, during her lifetime. Price passed away in 1998, and Norma died in December 2013. Upon Norma's passing the estate plan called for a distribution to the Pi and Tau chapters, and to Psi Upsilon Fraternity, with the remainder providing income for the Gehrke's daughter, Lisa, during her lifetime. Upon Lisa's death, the charitable remainder will be paid to The Psi Upsilon Foundation.

The Pi will use Price's thoughtful bequest to help with chapter house repairs and to purchase new kitchen equipment. The Tau intends to use the funds to help restore a meal plan at the Castle and to help fund the cost of getting delegates to the Psi U Convention.

Bob E. Morris, Rho '74 (Wisconsin) was the "go to" alumnus in Madison for the new Rho.  He also, a decade ago, reorganized and reinvigorated the Rho scholarship fund.  In late May Bob was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, from which he perished on July 18, 2014.
When Bob was close to death, his best friend in the fraternity, Rick Mateer, Rho '71, called the UW athletic department and arranged for Bo Ryan, Wisconsin's basketball coach, to call Bob the next morning.  Bob was being treated by a hospice worker at the time, so Bo left an incredible voicemail message.  Bob's son said that his father lit up like a small child at Christmas when Bob listened to the voicemail.

Bob called Rick that afternoon, telling him about Bo's call, unaware it was Rick who had set it up.  Bob told Rick that he was going to call Bo on Sunday (four days later) as Bo had left his private phone number.  Bob went to sleep that evening, his spirits buoyed by Bo's call, and died peacefully in his sleep that evening.

Chuck Liecht, Rho '67, president of the Rho Alumni Association writes:  "Bob was a good man, and my fraternity brother for 48 years.  At the request of his widow, we are going to name one of our annual Rho scholarships the 'Bob Morris annual scholarship award'."
