The Leadership Institute Curriculum

The leadership institute this summer will include both large group session and smaller tracks for both undergraduates and alumni.

 

Keynote, Saturday:

Michael J. Dunphy, Ph.D.

 Dr. Michael Dunphy is a professional speaker, educator and leadership coach. Since 2000, Dr. Dunphy has completed over 600 training programs for professionals in businesses organizations and universities across America. Having earned three college degrees, including a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Dr. Dunphy has been involved in leadership roles throughout his university career and is currently serving as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Walsh University. Dr. Dunphy is also the CEO of two successful business and has coached men and women in leadership skills in companies as diverse as Pfizer, Disney, Kenan Advantage Group, NovoNordisk, WIC, Allergan and many others. Dr. Dunphy is also the professional speaking coach for an NFL player and an NBA player. Highly trained in Situational Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Conflict Prevention and Resolution and Building High Performance Teams, Dr. Dunphy is one of the most “in demand” professionals in leadership training and executive coaching. He is also highly skilled in martial tactical training, having 40 years of experience in close-quarter combat skills and practical application of martial principles to leadership.  In addition, Dr. Dunphy has published two books, numerous articles on leadership and many peer-reviewed publications in biochemistry. As a professional educator, Dr. Dunphy is well versed in the current best-practices in neurological learning and his programs are all highly interactive, practical and filled with immediately useful knowledge and skills.

 

Applied Situational Leadership: How to Optimize Yourself and Lead Effectively

 

The core trait of all great leaders is that they are initiators. Leaders are able to rally talented people and help them to apply themselves individually and collectively to a cause. The cause may be to create an amazing Fraternal Brotherhood, to run a great new business, to complete a major project or to restructure an existing process like a curriculum or marketing campaign. Leaders must be initiators, risk takers who point our options and start action, but they must also be able to keep talented people engaged and develop them as they move forward. In this session, you will learn how to do both. You will be introduced to the “champion mindset” of initiators and the tactical methods of Situational Leadership to help you develop yourself and anyone else in any “situation”. When you finish this session, you will understand how to apply both strategies right away and you will be given tools to help you increase your ability to use these methods for a lifetime. This session will be highly interactive, loaded with practical tips and directly applicable to your life immediately.

 

How to Organize and Run a Great Meeting

 

Meetings are one of the core tools of leadership. Unfortunately, most leaders do not know how to run a meeting properly and do not know how to make a meeting actually worthwhile for those attending. When most people hear the word “meeting”, they cringe and immediately see this as a likely negative experience. This does not have to be the case. A properly orchestrated meeting is not just a time to transmit information, but it is time to share ideas, reinforce purpose, garner commitment, educate, motivate and inspire. This requires work on the part of the meeting leader. Every meeting is an event and often a critical event. Every meeting should be something people look forward to and actually see value in!  This one-hour session will provide you with the tools to make awesome meetings happen every time. You will learn the PRE-MAIN-POST model and how to apply it, tools to manage a meeting and tactics to open and close meetings properly. Post-program resources will be provided.

 

Upsilon Case Study

We're lucky to have the Upsilon Chapter at the University of Rochester hosting us for the 175th Psi Upsilon Convention and want to take time to recognize the achievements of this chapter. After a four year suspension from campus, the Upsilon Chapter returned to Rochester in the Fall of 2013 and made some changes to their operations to help ensure they would be able to sustain a positive image on campus and attract high quality members. One of the foremost changes was the fact that they eliminated pledging and created a one tier membership model. This Spring the Upsilon Chapter was awarded the Expectations for Excellence Award for Overall Excellence in Strategic Planning, the highest honor a Greek organization can receive at the university. Members and alumni of the Upsilon Chapter will discuss their brotherhood model, what challenges they face, and what works well.

Best Practices Roundtables

Chapter Involvement – Where are we and where should we be going?

This breakout session will provide an opportunity for undergraduates to share their experiences and thoughts on chapter involvement. The structure will be focused on open discussion with guided questions when needed. The sessions overall goal is to share experiences and have meaningful discussions about what chapters are doing right and what can be improved in this regard.

Philanthropy and Service –How are we truly living our value of Service to Society?

Do our brothers truly know the difference between philanthropy and service? This breakout session will provide an opportunity for undergraduates to share their experiences and thoughts on philanthropy and service initiatives at the international and local levels.  The structure will be an open discussion focused on sharing programs, initiatives, and events implemented by individual chapters that demonstrate our value of Service to Society. 

Risk Management – How are you demonstrating Responsible Social Conduct?

During this breakout session, undergraduate brothers will discuss what it means to demonstrate responsible social conduct and how to help their chapters continue to manage risk and reduce harm. It’ll be a general discussion featuring an opportunity for brothers to share their best practices while answering some guiding questions about parties/formals, diversity and inclusion, mental health, and sexual assault. The goal is for brothers to discuss ideas that can be brought back to their own chapters after convention.


Awards Banquet Keynote, Sunday:

John Dunnigan, Upsilon '68 (Rochester)

John Dunnigan is president of Scandinavian Leadership Inc. Using the proprietary tool of LOTS® John works with leaders and their co-workers in developing their business, their teamwork and as individuals. His work has included U.S. and international companies such as Bausch & Lomb, Corning, Summit Technology, Astra Tech, Ericsson, Herc Rental Equipment and many more.

As an undergraduate at the University of Rochester John served as an officer of the Upsilon of Psi Upsilon for three years. He is a member of the University Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation he taught school and coached football at Aquinas Institute in Rochester and at Newfane NY high school. He then worked at Bausch & Lomb participating in the introduction of the Soflens® soft contact lens in the United States and internationally. Next John served as president of Pharmacia Ophthalmics Inc. where they helped revolutionize cataract surgery with the introduction of Healon® (hyaluronic acid) and viscosurgery to the ophthalmic surgeon. In 1986 he left Pharmacia to establish Scandinavian Leadership Inc.

He and his wife Susan have three married daughters and six grandchildren.
