Phi Alumnus Receives Balfour Fellowship

Nick Chang, Phi '03 (Michigan)
Nicholas Chang, Phi '03 (University of Michigan) is a recipient of a Balfour Fellowship from the North American Interfraternity Conference Foundation. Nick is a studying Romance languages and cultures, with a focus on Romanian and Portuguese languages, at the Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai in Romania.

The fellowship is open to initiated members of NIC, NPC, NPHC, and PFA member fraternities and sororities who are full-time students enrolled in accredited graduate or professional schools. Selection is based on excellence in many areas including fraternity and interfraternity service, campus and community involvement, enhancement of fraternity ideals, and scholastic achievement. The minimum GPA requirement to apply is 3.8.

Etas Sing at Carnegie Hall

During last fall's Rivalry Weekend in New York City, when Lehigh played Lafayette in Yankee Stadium, Etas John Sise '72, Dan Benson '63, Jim Froggatt '62, John Frey '82 met up at Carnegie Hall. Along with about 100 Lehigh Choral alumni, the four brothers sang the first half of a concert presented by Lehigh University Choral Arts.

Four ensembles comprise Lehigh Choral Arts: Choral Union, University Choir, Dolce, and the historic Glee Club, which is enjoying its 138th year. The concert featured compositions by Dr. Stephen Samitz, LU Choral Arts professor.

Dan Benson reports, "I and other Etas have been singing with the Choral alumni for several years, mostly at Lehigh, doing such major works as the Tchaikovsky "1812 Overture" (in Russian)."

Foundation Scholarship Recipients Recognized

Bill Wishard, Delta Delta '64, Honorary Executive Council Life Member, presented (L) Matt Huckaby and (R) Avery Davis, both Lambda Sigma '16 with certificates in recognition of their awards. Huckaby is archon of the chaptera and a new student orientation leader. He is a business administration major with a Spanish minor. In his spare time, Huckaby volunteers at a local homeless organization.

Avery Davis distinguished himself as academic chair by improving the chapter's GPA by 30%. He is active in Pepperdine's choir and a cappella group and create sets for the university's musicals, plays and dance shows when he is not studying biology.

Hasan Nadeem and Peter Schmitz both Rho '16, received their scholarship certificates from Chapter Leadership Consultant Dominic House, Lambda Sigma '15during his visit to the chapter early this month.

Hasan is the current Rho archon, majoring in biology and economics with a minor in global health. He has interned with a surgical oncology research lab, volunteered in an Honduran clinic and he tutors at the University.

Peter Schmitz served as ritual, recruitment and alumni relations chair as well as 2nd angelos. He supervises competitive sports, has seved on a medical mission to Guatemala and volunteers at a food bank. He is a neurobiology major with a business minor.

Patrick Gilrane, Psi '84 presented a certificate to Matt Glebus, Psi '17 at a recent Psi gathering. Matt was the recipient of the Gardner A. Callanen, Psi 1929 scholarship. Matt is an econ and math major. He has run the Psi cornhole philanthropy, served as recruitment co-chair plays varsity football player. Mattis a member of the Hamilton Investment Club, volunteers for Special Olympics, and tutors high school students.

The Psi Upsilon Foundation awarded 22 grants awarded to undergraduates this 2015-16 year.
