Eta Wins Prestigious Scholarship

Jonathan Witt, Eta '15 (Lehigh University) has been named one of 100 recipients of the Buick Achievers Scholarship, a renewable scholarship awarded annually by Buick and funded by the GM Foundation.

The program seeks committed student leaders who plan to major in a specified course of study that focuses on engineering and technology or select design and business-related programs. Selection is based on the applicant's academic achievement, financial need, participation in campus and community activities, work experience, and interest in a career in or related to the automotive industry.

Witt's credentials certainly qualified him, as his award totaled $25,000 – the highest possible value.

Witt plans to attend graduate school and pursue a PhD in chemical engineering. He hopes to open his own business while in graduate school which will focus on sustainable agriculture that uses renewable energy generation and storage to power it year round.

Pi Renovations Restore Historic House

For more than a century, the Pi Chapter has been proud to call the big house at 101 College Place their home. But a few years back, the chapter's alumni leaders noticed something about the house that threatened that longstanding sense of pride: It wasn't pretty.

It was in disrepair and had been for quite a while. That realization launched a $350,000 renovation of the building's facade, an extensive project that was carried out in phases between 2009 and 2013, with the crowning touches completed this September.

"This was a long time coming, and we're exceedingly proud of what we've accomplished," says Jim Cornacchia, Pi '86, vice president of the Pi Trust Association. "It means a lot to us to occupy that particular spot on campus, so we take our position seriously and want to be a good neighbor."

Zeta Zeta Releases New Book

This fall Dr. Barry Gough, Zeta Zeta '62 (University of British Columbia) released a highest latest book, The Elusive Mr. Pond - The Soldier, Fur Trader and Explorer Who Opened the Northwest. The book focuses on Peter Pond a soldier, fur trader and explorer who mapped much of the Canadian northwest but has gone mostly unnoticed in history.

This founding partner of the North West Company opened the fur trade into the far distant Arctic watershed, further west than traders had ever been before. Pond was also a mentor and predecessor to Sir Alexander Mackenzie.

Yet today, Mackenzie is known to schoolchildren as a great Canadian explorer who gave his name to the country's longest river, whereas Pond only receives "some notice or vague mention in any serious history of Canada or the fur trade."

An award-winning historian Barry Gough writes, Pond "lived at the edge of truth, on the margins of respectability, and it is no surprise that many wicked stories were circulated about him in his time. He's a literary oddity, his story often half-told. He deserves better."
