Psi Upsilon's 168th Convention will be held at the Hotel Palomar in Washington, DC. This year's Convention will include a Potomac River dinner cruise on an authentic split sternwheeler. The Cherry Blossom is a re-creation of a 19th century Victorian riverboat, complete with ornate iron railings and a plush interior of brass and mahogany. Her two interior salons are air-conditioned for year-round comfort. The open-air third deck offers a spectacular view of Old Town Alexandria and the Washington, D.C. skyline. Join us for the cruise or other events during the Convention by registering at www.psiu.org. |

IndyCar Series team owner Sam Schmidt, Lambda Sigma '86 (Pepperdine), had a month of May to remember. Two of his drivers qualified in the top-five at the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500. Alex Tagliani won his first Indy 500 pole position, while his Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammate, Townsend Bell, qualified in fourth place. Unfortunately both drivers crashed out of the race. However the day was not a complete wash-out as Dan Wheldon won the race on the last lap. Sam Schmidt Motorsports has a technical alliance with Brian Herta Autosport and driver Dan Wheldon. In addition to his duties as team owner, Schmidt, a former IndyCar driver who was paralyzed in a crash in 2000, has created the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, which supports research into paralysis treatment and quality-of-life issues. Sam is the founding president of Psi Upsilon's Lambda Sigma chapter at Pepperdine University. |

Matt Carter, Tau '07 (Penn) is the producer of WEtv network's new reality cooking show Staten Island Cakes. The show follows 21-year old pastry chef Vinny Buzzetta, who owns a bakery on Staten Island and employs his mother, sister and friends. This is not Matt's first foray into televised cooking shows as he was involved in the production of a 2007 Food Network program, Dinner Impossible, which featured Psi Upsilon's Tau chapter ("the Castle") at the University of Pennsylvania. Staten Island Cakes premiers June 21 on the WE network. |
Lehigh Students Build Rainwater Shed BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Students at Lehigh University are hoping to put those April showers to good use. Members of the Psi Upsilon fraternity were putting the finishing touches on a shed they designed to collect rainwater. They hope to reduce reliance on the water supply. The shed was constructed at the Lehigh Community Garden on Goodman Campus. Organizers hope to grow fruits and vegetables at the garden, then distribute them to those in need. "A certain percentage of what we grow will be distributed to the southside food banks. Perhaps other ways of getting this fresh organically grown produce to people who may not have access to fresh vegetables as much as they should," said organizer John Pettegrew. Organizers said they hope the one acre community park will continue to expand. |

John Logie, Delta Delta-Phi '61 (Williams-Michigan) shares a number of things with Earl Babst, Iota-Phi 1893 (Kenyon-Michigan) president of Psi U's Executive Council in the 1920's: Circumstance lead each to two colleges as undergraduates where they affiliated with Psi U chapters, each completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and each spent his summers at Lake Charlevoix near Charlevoix, Michigan. John met Brother Babst at Lake Charlevoix and remembers one particular summer when Brother Babst celebrated his 90th birthday. |
